Conversational Spanish/Honors Spanish V (42419531): This course allows students to refine the three modes of communication via a continued, richer study of the history and culture of Spanish-speaking people. This course will help students analyze the social, economic, geographic, and historical factors that affect cultural products and practices in various Spanish-speaking countries. Conversational Spanish is a different sort of class. As the name suggests, this class is based entirely on the student’s ability to converse in Spanish. The student will practice to develop proficiency in oral expression. They also will use the language strategically, to accomplish objectives and resolve conflicts, in culturally accurate circumstances using appropriate vocabulary. In this course,class activities will help them to:
  • develop the ability to maintain a conversation
  • enhance their fluency
  • expand their vocabulary and review grammatical structures
  • acquire confidence in using their Spanish
  • develop sensitivity to Hispanic traditions and customs
  • acquire information about life, problems and current trends in the Hispanic world
Note: This course includes a service learning component.


Performance Standards: The focus of this course is standards-based and performance-based instruction using the Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century, ACTFL Performance Guidelines for K-12 Learners, and the JCPS Core Curriculum Content Standards (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities).
Core Academic Content: Vocabulary related to units of study, all verb tenses of the indicative and subjunctive moods, grammatical structures to include: conditional and imperative forms, sequence of tenses, use of subjunctive in noun clauses.


Units of Study: Unidad 1.¿Cómo veo mi futuro?, 2. La inmigración, 3. ¿Cómo respondemos? 4. La economía y los negocios, 5. Nuestra cultura a través del arte. 6. La belleza de la vida, 7. El papel de la familia en la sociedad 7. Sostenibilidad y medio ambiente 8. Project/student-based unit: Hawthorne/Noe Internship.


Resources/Materials Needed:Students purchase: File cards for vocabulary, loose-leaf paper, 1 twin-pocket folder, and $5.00 fee.

Forms of assessment/grading scale:
A variety of formats and scoring guides will be utilized to evaluate student performance in specific areas related to functional proficiency. Individual scoring guides will be discussed before each assignment or assessment is to be completed. Below is a listing of the areas that will comprise student grades with a listing of the percentage each area counts toward the overall grade.
1) Student Engagement With Standards (20%).

Because of the nature of this class, your active participation in all activities is expected and required. In order to receive the maximum grade, you must attend class, participate actively in class discussions and activities every day, and speak Spanish as much as possible. At the start of each class learners will respond a prompt related to current material (warm up activity). Hawthorne’s visit reflection (what went well, what we should do differently next time). It is always due the class after our visit.

2) Student Progression Toward Standards (30%).

Homework will help to practice and review vocabulary, grammar, and language skills in general. Student will be allowed to redo their homework, if they turn it in on time. Self-assessments serve to analyze and set goals to improve their language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish. Quizzes serve as periodic mini assessments of vocabulary and grammar acquisition and are most often announced beforehand, but you can expect some pop quizzes as well. Pop quizzes generally cover information learned that week in class.
3) Student Mastery of Standards (50%).

Performance assessments, presentations, and projects for this course are tools to measure student performance in the language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The results will help the teacher and students to set new learning targets in order to allow student growth. WIKI will be use to do group projects and to receive information about Hawthorne’s visits. Service Learning Project in partnership with Hawthorne elementary school and/or Noe Middle school.

Other possibilities: Field trips, as appropriate, to plays, films, restaurants; Trip.
Make-up Policy:SBDM Policy as printed in the Student Handbook. Absences for which the student has foreknowledge; work should be requested in advance.
Some activities, by their very nature, cannot be recreated. I reserve the right to assign an alternative activity on the same topic, when possible.
Make-up test are given on Monday, after school in my classroom. No exceptions.
The Academic Integrity Policy established by SBDM and approved by the JCPS Board of Education will be strictly enforced. Any instance of cheating will result in a Zero o the assignment.
Plagiarism: This is serious academic offense. The SBDM approved policy will be strictly enforced. No exceptions.
  • Copying homework or allowing one’s homework to be copied is a form of plagiarism.
  • Use of a computer translator program is a form of plagiarism.
  • Work edited by a native speaker or an educated speaker is a form of plagiarism.
  • Submission of any work that is not entirely one’s own is plagiarism.


Classroom Rules:
  1. Be on time. Tardy note required.
  2. Be respectful of yourself, others, and all property.
  3. Be prepared for class with appropriate materials.
  4. No food or drinks or gum are allowed.
  5. Dress Code will be strictly enforced.
  6. All classroom interactions (permission to go to bathroom, etc) will be carried out in Spanish.
